    Dear People,

Please help. I am trying to create 3D views from uploaded obj and stl files, created from iges models, created with my CAD program.

Large stl files, about 12 MB to 140 MB, do not fully display. That is, there are entire items and/or surfaces missing from view. I have imported these same models back into my CAD program and Cad Exchanger (Trial Edition I use to create object files) to check for errors, and the models look great.

Object files do not display at all. I tried (numerous times) without success, to copy and paste an object file name (from in my media library) into a page http text block that just worked with stl files. BTW, the same editing technique works with any small stl file in my library.

    Thank you for any feedback…

How is it you get a 3D view by pasting a stl file name into a “http text” block? I’d think the filename would just render as plain text. What’s the exact name of the block you use? Is it a plugin’s block for 3D views?

I’ll assume so since there is no standard block that will result in properly processing a stl file. You should seek assistance from the developer of that block. I suspect you’re running up against a memory or file size limitation of your server.

Here is the location of instructions for the vrm 360 plugin:

    https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/vrm360/#installation

I am going to read them again. I am very new to WordPress, so I probably missed a step or a setting, or did not upload some necessary file(s).

I gotta go do something else right now, so when I get back, will give it another go…

    Thanks for your reply, bcworkz

    Hey bcworkz,

I guess I did not really answer your question.

I used a plugin called vrm 360. In the plugin instructions they give a short code to copy and paste into a custom HTML block. You edit the code where is says “full_3d_model_url” and paste the full url of your uploaded 3D model.

I first put in the address of an stl file (used for 3D printing) and it worked. All I had to do was change the name of the stl file to another in the same library folder and the 3D image would show the other model.

My problem is that when i substitute an object file name the same way, it does not work.

Object files are multi-colored so assembly models look like assemblies and not single parts like stl model. They also have better surface resolution and can have texture.

Anyway, I hope that answers your question.

    Hopefully, someone can answer mine,

    Thanks…

Well, welcome to WordPress then ?? Thanks for the explanation.

It probably will not make any difference, but you might try using the shortcode block instead of the HTML block.

I suggest you ask for help in the plugin’s dedicated support forum where its devs and expert users can help you. We’re more knowledgeable of WP core here than any particular plugin.

Good news! I figured out that the reason the object model was not working is that I need to also upload the associated “mtl” file. This file gives important information for the obj file to work.

Bad news is that parts of the (now viewable) parts are missing, even though my other viewing software can load and view the complete model.

I have an idea to try, but if it still don’t work, will go to the forum bcworkz suggested and ask there.

    Thanks mon.

Okay my ideas worked, I uploaded an error free model.

But now, the center of rotation in the view is way off, so it very hard for a user to focus on the part.

The part is from a large assembly. So what happened is that I exported a model while it was in position.

I have to export another model with the origin of my part at the center of CAD model space, instead of where it is in the assembly. That way, the center of rotation should be within the part.

    Just thinking out loud…

Hey, I changed the center of rotation in the file and it also works in the view now!

Now the big last step. Get all parts and surfaces to appear in the large assemblies. This may take awhile. I already tested a small assembly and found an acceptable setting for iges model creation. Now I am going to try a much larger one. Last time it took over an hour just to create a 1 Gig iges model.

    We will see…
