Conflict with Google Tag Manager Plugin

    While this plugin does what it states (shows data in the dashboard from supported Google platforms), I found it conflicted with another plugin I was using for Google Analytics Enhanced Ecommerce Tracking. If this is something the developers would like to resolve, I am submitting the details here. If this issue is not fixed, I will need to leave this plugin uninstalled because I value the ecommerce tracking more than the data in the Dashboard.

    I use the “Google Tag Manager for WordPress” plugin by Thomas Geiger for Enhanced Ecommerce tracking in my analytics account. I started observing Ecommerce data not showing in my account. After some testing, I found using “Site Kit by Google” prevented the above plugin from passing product data in the data layer to my GA account (as diagnosed with the WASP chrome extension). Also the “Google Tag Assistant” chrome extension revealed that the Site Kit plugin was causing my analytics tag to fire 2x which was surprising behavior since I thought it was only pulling data from my GA account to display on the backend and not attempting to also send data to my GA account from traffic on the front end.

  • @kurtschnabel thanks for your report! We certainly want to address compatibility issues where we can so having this information is helpful. A few questions:

    1) In Site Kit, for the Google Analytics connection, were you using Site Kit to insert its tag/ snippet or another method (plugin or theme)? The plugin should detect that another method is used and not insert an additional tag to avoid double tracking.

    2) Do you have any info to share from your WASP findings to help us identify the issue? We’d like to do further testing on our side, but it would be great to get more details about your experience.

    Same problem.

    I had GA installed via Google Tag Manager (GTM) (numerous sites)

    Installing Google Site Kit (GSK) seems to duplicate the GA tag.
    > In Google Tag Assistant (GTA): duplication warning (tracking same property twice)

    So, I’ve removed the tag and property from GTM.
    > Now I’ve simply got a “Non-standard implementation” warning for GA.

    It seems either-or, duplication or non-standard implementation.
    Or the third option, remove Site Kit until implementation is standardised?

    For reference, I’m using the latest Divi 4.0 theme with WordPress.
    I’ve tried installing GTM via various plugins, but the 4.0 theme finally seems compliant with GTM… at least, all was well until I installed Site Kit.

    @kurtschnabel I’m just following up to get more information.

    To connect your site to Google Analytics, are you primarily connecting the Google Analytics tag with Google Tag Manager, and then using the plugin Google Tag Manager for WordPress to extend its tracking functionality?

    If so, Site Kit currently cannot detect Google Analytics through the GTM container ID. It looks for the GA tracking ID in the html to determine whether or not to insert its code snippet. If the ID isn’t found it will insert its snippet by default.

    With that said, you can configure Site Kit to not insert its snippet by going to Settings > Google Analytics > Edit > Remove Snippet > Confirm Changes. Here’s a screenshot. You can still select the Account, Property, and View you want to display on the dashboard manually.

    Apologies for taking a while to respond.

    After the update recently released, I reinstalled the plugin and it appears to not be having the issues that I had mentioned before. From what I can tell it is passing along the ecommerce data correctly and is causing a duplicate tag error.
