• When demonstrating WordPress in an education (adult/child) environment, I used to create a handful of accounts, Student1, Student2 etc, each with a different password and privileges to suit. – I used to use [email protected] for all of the email addresses.

I understand that WordPress would not want you registering two accounts for one person; but surely an administrator user should be able to override this?

  • This is because the “forgot your password” page allows you to retrieve your password by your email address. If multiple users had the same it would send all the passwords to that email address.

There was a plugin created for this problem – Allow Multiple Accounts – which used to work until 2.8.1 or 2.8.2, but unfortunately it hasn’t been updated since then and something seems to have changed in the code, so it doesn’t work any longer. Please post back if you find an alternative solution.

I have this same problem as well.

I’m the Administrator and I’d like to be able to create different users with different roles so that I can see what each role (with their respective permission levels) can see on the screen.

Unfortunately, I only have one email address and don’t want to have to create a ton of email addresses to accomplish this simple task.

I still can’t figure out why Administrators (who supposed to have total power over their site) can’t create more than one account with the same email address. How is anyone supposed to test their site? Good grief!

The change to WordPress to enforce unique email addresses was implemented via this trac ticket:
    https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/9563

The Allow Mutliple Accounts plugin, does allow NEW users to be added with non-unique email addresses, but you can edit an existing user and change the email to an address used by another user. That’s at 2.8.4
