Remove elements from Add New Post/Edit Post screens?

    I am setting up a WordPress site for a group of novice users. I would like to make the author interface as simple as possible for them and remove unessential elements, such as Except, Trackbacks, Custom Fields, and Discussion. However, I would like the admin user to still be able to set defaults, e.g. for the Discussion options.

    Does anyone know of a plugin that will accomplish this? Barring that, what would be a good way to accomplish this?

  • I think what you want is a role manager. I have used Role Manager for a long time; and there are other plugins that handle giving permissions and access to many aspects of WP admin if you search in the plugin directory.

    Although the Role Manager’s default capabilities are not fine-grained enough for what I am looking to do, I think it is a step in the right direction and I may be able to customize it to do what I want it to do. Thanks for the tip.

    I’m also considering creating an admin theme that makes certain elements of the add/edit post screen not display. I’m more interested in making it easy-to-use for newcomers than I am restricting access to features.

    That’s a interesting idea. The admin section has gotten more sophisticated over the last few years, and I think a plugin that simplfies it would gain some users.
