I note that another person had a similar problem with a .rnd fine in wp-admin, but the thread was unclear about how the matter was evaluated and resolved, as the poster did not want to share certain information.

It was suggested that the file might be an artifact of a plug-in, and in my case I added two new plug-ins, “Table of Contents Plus” and “Broken Link checker” the day before the scan. Here is the text of the Wordfence notice (marked “High Severity):

    Filename: wp-admin/.rnd
    File Type: Core
Details: This file is in a WordPress core location but is not distributed with this version of WordPress. This scan often includes files left over from a previous WordPress version, but it may also find files added by another plugin, files added by your host, or malicious files added by an attacker.

Is there some guidelines or investigations I can do to decide whether this is malicious or an artifact of adding the plug-ins?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hey @dwainwilder,

This likely is being created by a plugin. Can you please share a list of your current active plugins?

    Thanks,

    Gerroald

    Hey @dwainwilder,

We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’ve gone ahead and marked this thread as resolved.

Please feel free to open another thread if you’re still having issues with Wordfence.

    Thanks,

    Gerroald
