• A client’s WordPress installation (5.3) is complaining about failed plugin updates. As a reason, WP shows “not found”. When I take a look at the plugin list after the “failed” update, I can see the plugins in question actually ARE updated – the version number did change. The same thing happens to translation updates (WooCommerce), there it says “Download failed. Not found”. Even when I try to install a new plugin, WP says install did fail, but still the plugin is listed as installed and is working afterwards.

This seems to affect ALL plugins I have installed (or try to install). I have no problem downloading WP plugins from the server’s CLI. There are no entries in the PHP error logs, WP Site Health plugin does not report any problems. I have checked file/directory permissions, they are still correct (unchanged).

I have not found any information that helps troubleshooting this “not found” problem. Did anyone ever experience this kind of update failure? Any ideas how I could try to tackle down this problem?

I’m guessing it’s either a server configuration issue or a theme or plugin conflict. You can use the Health Check plugin to narrow down the cause. Enable troubleshooting mode, which deactivates all plugins and changes to the default theme for your view only. Other users still see the normal site. While you cannot activate new plugins in this mode, you can install plugins as a test.

If you still have trouble in this mode, it’s probably a server issue. If installing works OK, restore the normal theme, then each plugin, one at a time using the troubleshooting admin bar item. Test install after each. When the problem recurs, the last activated module is the cause. Take up the issue with the responsible devs.
