• Hi there

I could use some help moving my WordPress blog from my current host to a new domain and host.

I do not have access to the old host, but the webmaster has provided me with SQL backup and Home directory backup files.

There are lots of walkthroughs for this but they appear to be different depending on circumstances.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Update: I think that THIS is the kind of plan I need to follow, but I still don’t understand the following:-

    how to edit the PHP
how to use the PHP thing on my new host control panel

These steps are mentioned in all the walkthroughs but its all a bit over my head really.

I have the backup of files, and the database, but don;t want to make a wrong move because I am worried about screwing things up.

Better directions: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Moving_WordPress. Should be everything you need.

Yes, I read that one too. But there is no mention of how to edit the PHP files, or what to to with the PHP databases on my new host’s cPanel.

I was hoping for a line by line type of walkthrough, such as the ones you find that solve Linux problems for noobs.

This is totally alien territory for me!

Who told you this?: how to edit the PHP, how to use the PHP thing on my new host control panel.

You don’t need to edit PHP to move WP to a new host.

You just need to the following:
    1) Move all your files (make sure ALL files) and database to the new host
    2) Take the database name, username and password from your new host
    3) Open the wp-config.php file and enter the details there ( you can use any editor like notepad to edit php files)
    4) Change the domain name using the steps here:

Ok I went into my cPanel and went to backups and uploaded the whole load of stuff, but the folder name seems to be the old blog name.

How do I make sure I put it in the right place and give it all the right name in the new cPanel?

What do I do with these names, usernames and password?

Where in the php file do I put them?

I opened it using notepad and it came out like a load of symbols.

I think I really need someone to help me through this step by step if anyone is willing?

I have Google Chat, MSN, Skype if anyone can help.

If its as simple as it sounds I guess it won’t take more than 10 minutes or so. I would be very grateful to anyone willing to help.

    Cheers

Do I have to install wordpress from scratch in order to migrate my existing account? That seems in contradiction to what all the other walkthroughs are telling me…I have backups of files and databases.

I think that all I need to know is what files go where in the filesystem of my new host.

Ok I moved all my wordpress files to my public_html folder, but I don’t know what the exact values are that should go into my wp-config.php files

How do I know what my DB name etc is? I tried the name in the cPanel page MySql Databases, but I’m not sure of path etc

(I am getting the error “unable to establish a database connection” )

Ask you host for the DB address and path and then check wp-config.php

    Thread Starter chrisblizzard

    (@chrisblizzard)

Can I not find out the path using my cPanel?

You can, but you said above you weren’t sure of it. See if your web host has a help FAQ on installing WP or working with MySQL.

Thanks Songdogtech for your continued help. I now have my front page up and running at

but none of the links work.

Database is apparently in place, but I guess something is set wrong.
