Fatal error: Unknown: Failed opening required ‘/home2/dibsmft/public_html/wordfence-waf.php’ (include_path=’.:/opt/php71/lib/php’) in Unknown on line 0

I have deleted auto_prepend reference in user.ini, then deleted user.ini, when no fix.
Looked in .htaccess. Then removed WAF section.
    I have no php.ini.
Renamed wordfence-waf.php, then restored when no fix.
Renamed WF plugin folder, then restored when no fix.
I am now stuck. What should I do next?
    Thanks ??

  • Hey @dibsmft7,

What are the permissions set to on the wordfence-waf.php file?

Can you please try resetting Wordfence and let me know if it helps?

    Permissions are 0644.

SInce I have no access to the site, other than through cPanel,I don’t see how I can reset (or remove) WordFence by following those instructions.

The error refers to the path …/home2/dibsmft/public_html/wordfence-waf.php
when the file path is in fact …/home2/dibsmft/public_html/elizabethhaines.co.uk/wordfence-waf.php. Is that significant?

    Thanks for looking ??

I have now found this has happened to all of my websites with Wordfence installed. Might this give a clue to the cause. Thanks.

I have found one of my websites which is still OK. It has WordFence 7.4.2 and needs updating to 7.4.5. Is this helpful?

    Hey @dibsmft7,

Have you tried the manual method? You’ll want to remove all of the Wordfence database tables as well. If you haven’t tried this, please do and let me know how it goes.

I had already done that with no result, as in the original question.
However I have found the problem, thanks to your suggestion.
An automatic installation had placed references to Wordfence in the directory above the site’s directory. I commented out the references and that site is now back online. Now to fix the rest.
    Thank you again ??
