• Hi Mike,

It’s been a while since I worked with setting up new comics using Webcomic and I have a question.

I’m experimenting with multiple comics in a single WordPress installation, and every time I click New Collection, the browser goes blank and nothing happens. Any idea what’s going on here?

I’m not sure if this means the feature in broken in the latest version of WP (5.3.2) or if this is happening because I’m using Desktop Server to develop the site.

    Here’s what I know:

I tried this using a clean WP install and with multiple ‘stock’ WB themes, so nothing crazy or extreme going on.

I haven’t tried this with Inkblot because I want to move away from Inkblot and use another theme.

I was able to set up a sample collection with Webcomic containing 5 comic strips, and this works perfectly fine in my test site. I only ran into the suspended ‘blank’ screen problem when attempting to create a second collection.

Thanks in advance for any helpful info.

    Ok, a little more info.

I tried this in a copy of my current website in DesktopServer (a local testing environment.) Even here I’m seeing the same blank window after I click New Collection.

Still don’t know if this is a compatibility problem with DesktopServer or the latest WP.

Maybe I can try using Webcomic with an older version of WP in DesktopServer and see if it works correctly.

    Wait…a…minute…

This might be a refresh problem.

When I returned to my first test project in DesktopServer, I found FIVE Webcomic collections waiting for me. My guess is that Webcomic did create a collection each time I clicked New collection, it just didn’t properly return to the Settings window.

Maybe this is a compatibility bug between Webcomic and the latest WP? Anyway, for now it seems maybe I can at least continue working on test project.

I’ll revisit the New Collection button problem a little later and report again if I learn anything new about it.

Thanks for the report Greenlaw! You should be redirected to the admin dashboard after clicking a New Collection link from a collection settings page. FWIW, it seems to work on a clean install of WordPress 5.3.3-alpha with PHP 7.3.13

Thanks for the prompt reply Mike!

Just for the record, my test site in DesktopServer is running the following: WP 5.3.2 and PHP 7.3.1.

Maybe this is a local problem with DesktopServer on my laptop? If I get a chance, I’ll try a test on my live site and let you know if it works properly there.

Just a little more info for now (still in DesktopServer, not the live site.)

I tried this in Firefox and got the same results: blank window on New Collection, and no immediate return to the Admin Settings window. After manually clicking back and refreshing, I found another Collection in the list.

Next I tried deleting the extra Collections (up to six now. Yikes!) Same result; blank screen after deleting. If I refresh on the blank page, I get the following error:

    ERROR: options page not found.

When I manually clicked back, I was alerted with ‘Sorry, you are not allowed to access this page.’ Probably because it no longer existed?

Next, I tried clicking back one step farther, and this brought me to the Admin page with the deleted entry still visible. Finally, I refreshed from *this* page, and the entry disappeared.

Ok, four more to go… ??

Just a quick follow up: after playing around with all the options, I decided I really should continue with my current multi-site setup (separate site for each comic.) I can get Webcomic to include multiple comics in the main site but the options for customizing each comic’s ‘page’ is too limited this way. With sub-sites, I can make each comic’s ‘page’ look however I like. (I already knew this from the last time I experimented with this nearly two years ago, but I guess I needed to re-discover this to be sure.) ??

Anyway, one useful thing I learned from this experience is that Webcomic 5 appears to work well with more WP themes now. In the past, this was one of the reasons I stuck with Inkblot for so long. Inkblot is a fine theme but I wanted to explore other themes for my comics sites but didn’t have much luck back then. In yesterday’s tests, Webcomic 5 seemed to work fine with nearly every theme I tried.

Just thought you’d like to know that.

    Keep up the great work!

P.S., never solved the refresh issue and for now I’m moving on. I’ll check this again when the next WP update comes out.
