wp-footer alternative?

A lot of themes have been built without wp-footer. Consequently, my plugin does not work in a lot of themes. Is there any way around this, other than telling people to add the tag to their theme? (Many people are not this advanced).

I’m hoping that there may be some way to detect if wp-footer exists, and if it doesn’t, either create it for the user, or switch to wp-sidebar or something. Anyone got any ideas?
