  • if you just want to keep folks from browsing your folder, just create a simple index.html and stick it in there

    <html>
    <body>
    What are you looking in here for moron? (or whatever)
    </body>
    </html>

    you could even have it redirect to a real page

    That’s a partial solution — but since the links are apt to be stable over time and people do leave the community, I’d like to prevent access to the current version of the file even if someone knows the address.

    Thanks, though!

    It’s possible that role-scoper will do what I want. See this thread:
    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/348361?replies=2 I had tried an earlier version without success.

    I am having the exact same problem. Although User Access Manager hides pages, file links work for people that are not logged in. This is a pretty big security hole. I followed Samuel B’s advice and this helps, but it is not a complete solution. Converting2wp, have you found a fix?

    No, still no solution.

    This plugin reckons it can protect uploads – haven’t tried it myself:

    Thanks, but that looks like it’s an all or nothing solution. I want only certain categories to be private (yes, I could make them “private” individually, but it seems to be easier to train folks to think about their being in a category than their being private) and only some files need to be private (by default those with links from the posts in the private categories would be okay).
