I moved my WP install from a local copy on my hard disk to my server & all is well with one exception: When I attempt to upload images I get this error:

Unable to create directory /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/wpsite/wp-content/uploads/2009/10. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

That’s the old location of the WP site on my hard disk. But I can’t figure out which file I need to modify to point the uploads to the new location.

    Any help is appreciated!

  • Hi

There is some SQL you have to run in phpMyAdmin to change all the old file location references to the current ones.

The article is old but it explains it well and it still works

    Hi,

Assign 766 recursive permissions to wp-content directory and have a check.

    Thanks,

Thanks to you both for your suggestions. However, stvwlf’s article says “this guide is not about how to move WordPress blog from one server or host to another new hosting service” and that’s exactly what I’ve done that has resulted in my upload path not being correct. I had been working on this site using MAMP on my hard disk & have now moved the site to my server. I tried Shane’s suggestion which resulted in all CSS & images being broken on the site until I deactivated & reactivated all plugins – and still got the same error message when trying to upload an image.

    Does anyone else have suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

Check the settings on Admin > Settings > Miscellaneous are correct too.

Thanks alism. What is it they always say? Check to make sure it’s plugged in first? LOL I can’t believe I missed that. Thanks for pointing it out!

    Hi

regardless that the article I suggested says its not for moving to another server (which I had not noticed before), the problem you are having is that the URL’s from your old localhost installation are in the database and have to be changed to the URL’s of the new domain.
That is the part of the article I linked to that you are supposed to execute, to run the SQL queries on the live site, updating the database from the old URL’s to the new URL’s.

I don’t do it that way myself. I take the mySQL dumpfile (from your local install), load it in a text editor, and use search and replace to update all occurrences of the old domain (your localhost URL) to the new domain, save the dump file, and import the modified dumpfile into the new database. If you are comfortable using a text editor in that way, do it that way. The SQL version is easier for people who are not programming oriented.

Either way, you have to do this before the problem you report will be resolved.

Thank you stvwlf!!! You saved me much stress and heart-ache. Phewww!

    Joshua
