I installed Custom Post Type UI and created a new post type. Then I created another new one, along with a new taxonomy to go along with it. I then went back and deletd the first custom post type. Afterwards I happened to notice that all of my “default” WP posts are gone! Nothing is showing for “All Posts” on the backend. Disappeared from the front end too. When viewing the categories and tags all of the post counts still show but the posts themselves don’t.

I deleted the remaining custom post type along with the new taxomony, uninstalled the plugin and even used tried the Custom Post Type Cleanup plugin to be safe…and nothing. All my posts are still not showing.

Can someone help?! I didn’t think that I was risking losing all of my existing default WP posts by trying to create a new custom post type.

    Thank you

    Hi @bptexas.

Sorry to hear this is happening. Legitimately not sure what may be going on here, because I’ve never seen that happen that I can recall.

    * What post type slugs were you using for your custom post types?
    * Have you logged in and checked your database directly, if you know how, to verify that the wp_posts content is still there and showing posts you’d be expecting?
    * Just in case something catastrophic somehow happened here, do you have backups that you could restore from?
    * Have you tried flushing your permalinks after the removal of your created post types? Possible the rewrites somehow got mixed up somehow and they need flushed.

    Thanks for the reply Michael.

Post type slugs were “product_links” and then “product_links2” if I recall.

I just viewed the DB and the posts are indeed gone.

It looks like we are able to restore from backup. So that will be the next step.

Very strange. Thanks again for the reply.

It’s troubling me a bit to think that CPTUI could have somehow caused post content loss because we really don’t even directly touch that detail ourselves, especially the default post types like “post”. I’m wondering if something else may have happened somehow around the same time as trying to use the plugin, and it just looked like all one source.

Understood if not, but are you thinking about trying again with some new post types? or are you going to find a different solution for your needs? I’d be interested to see if it’s somehow repeatable so that we could potentially track things down.

Fair question. I don’t know what else it could have been but I’m open to something else being the cause, especially if you say you’re not touching things directly. We should have the backup restored today and I was going to experiment with things in a sandbox setting. I will try to report back here soon.

I do need a custom post type and custom field solution and yours was one of a couple options I was trying, so we’ll see where things end up.

    Thanks
