Hello, I have a question about updating WordPress to version 5.3.2. We are currently running WordPress 5.1.14. However, the last time I updated it, it changed the look of the theme on the website as well and I had to reverse the update.

I still want to update the version of WordPress that I have, but I am fearful that it will change the look of my website’s theme. Is there a way to prevent this from occurring? I didn’t see anything in the update that mentioned updating the look of the theme. Let me know. Thanks so much.

    Best,
    Katie

Updating WP itself should not change how your site looks, as that’s controlled by the theme. Is your theme up to date?

No, it’s not. I updated it last time, and it reverted back to what the theme originally looked like before I altered it.

If I attempt to update the theme again, would there be a way to do so without altering all the changes I have made?

    Thanks for responding!

Oh, you made changes to your theme? That’s bad. That’s why we strongly recommend using child themes, to separate your changes from the theme itself. You will probably have to update theme, create a child theme, then migrate your changes into the child theme.

However, updating WordPress itself should not change your theme (unless you modifed one of the standard themes that come with WordPress).
