hook for custom menu fields

is there a hook to use or any way to get import of custom menu fields working?
It would be nice as all the custom menu fields are in the xml file but ignored by the importer script. This has been a lack in the script for many years. It would be nice if this is fixed once and for all. Especially now that wordpress added support for that hook into the core (wp 5.4) and into the customizer.
