No. It may take a few hours, but the upgrade message should appear on the others when they have checked to see if there is an update.

Always make sure you do a backup before you run an upgrade as things can go wrong during an upgrade. Also, disable plugins and switch to the default theme before an upgrade. After upgrading you can always switch back again, but watch your plugins carefully as if something breaks it will likely be the fault of a plugin.

Hmm, all fine and well, but the auto upgrade does NOT work. It used to work fine, but it doesn’t now.

I have tested this on 6 different blogs, with the default theme switched on AND plugins disabled. No luck.

The upgrade screen tells me it’s “done” with two notifications that it downloaded the .zip file. And that’s the end of it.

It is a real pity, because auto-update beats the pants out of a manual one. It’s a real drag that is isn’t working.

Auto update isn’t working for me either. After clicking “Proceed” it hangs for a while and eventually switches to the following:

Downloading update from https://www.ads-software.com/wordpress-2.8.5.zip.

Unpacking the update.

Verifying the unpacked files

Installing the latest version

Could not copy file: /httpdocs/wp-admin/upgrade-functions.php

I’m having trouble as well on all of my blogs I admin. Gets to ‘Installing the latest version’ and then hangs forever. Reloading later results in a failed update. I’ve done the manual on two of them. Auto updates have always WORKED before this upgrade.

Might need to increase the amount of memory a PHP script may consume

1. If you have access to your PHP.ini file, change the line in PHP.ini
If your line shows 32M try 64M:
memory_limit = 64M ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (64MB)

2. If you don’t have access to PHP.ini try adding this to an .htaccess file:
php_value memory_limit 64M

3. Try adding this line to your wp-config.php file:
define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '64M');

4. Talk to your host.

Bluehost helped and came to same conclusion and raised memory to 64M and even had to set php.ini as SINGLE in cpanel–>php config

I tried to do the automatic upgrade:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 2354937 bytes) in /home/portigal/domains/portigal.com/public_html/wp/wp-includes/http.php on line 1324

Any suggestions how to fix? Why all of a sudden this problem? Thanks!

Automatic upgrade has NEVER worked for me. Sigh.

My Automatic upgrade worked, but I have a totally different problem, some of the Plugins do not seem to work or has caused a Blank Site ADMIN page to display.

Disabling WP Comment Remix has sorted the Blank Site Admin problem out…

I would rather just roll back to WordPress 2.8.4 where all my plugins worked but I can’t finad instructions anywhere to help me roll back from WordPress 2.8.5 to WordPress 2.8.4

Can someone PLEASE help me with roll back proceedure, seeing as I was stupid enough not to make a Database Backup before Automatically Upgrading to WP 2.8.5

Do you have any previous back up of the database from 2 weeks ago?

indiaberry, I don’t have on my system but my webhost is supposed to make backups… hang in there, let me check quickly…

It will teach me to make backups myself… like I always preach to clients of mine.

Can’t one just remove (move) the contents of wp-admin and wp-includes and replace them with 2.8.4’s wp-admin and wp-includes ??
