    Okay, so.
I have a site built in the Godaddy website builder that I now want to change over to WordPress. I do not want to take my website down in the meantime, and would like to build the website in WordPress and then change the domain over afterwards, because taking it directly over would require me o cancel the GoDaddy builder, and would take down the site until I can finish the WordPress version.

Other issue being it is a .ca website, which cannot be transferred to wordpress servers, only mapped, and I don’t know if you can change the domain name to it afterwards.

I was hoping to avoid buying a new domain name by using a subdomain, but I don’t think I can create a WordPress site on the subdomain without disabling the GoDaddy builder for the site at large.
Please help. I’m guessing I’ll have to purchase a new domain and build the site there, but want to be sure the .ca site and the current domain will be possible to change to before I do.

Are you planning on hosting the WordPress site with GoDaddy as well or with someone else?

You don’t need a sub domain at all.

Just through GoDaddy, but according to support there, to start editing with wordpress I need to cancel my GodaddyBuilder, and that would take my site down, which I am trying to avoid until the wordpress site is fully developed

That’s probably because of the type of package you have with them, but that’s not necessarily true either. Since GD Builders are on different severs all together. You would simply buy the WP Hosting package from them or whoever you want to host with and then build the site, get it ready and when done just redirect thru DNS.

If you build the site on a different host, then you’ll only change nameservers. As long as you don’t have emails running on the same domain.

so if I purchase the wordpress pack from them, I can start building the page that is already created through their builder and the site won’t be taken down? Thank you so much for helping, their support made things a lot more confusing for me

You’re not going to touch the Builder site at all. Just purchase a WordPress hosting package (you’ll need an SSL too) and start building over there. They will even install it for you. Unless they’ve done away with that as well.

However, you will have to have a temporary url or domain to work from/on. Ask them if they offer that as well. Hosts like WPEngine, Flywheel and Siteground all offer temp urls while you build/design your site.

Okay perfect. Thank you so much, this makes it so much clearer for me. I think a miscommunication with support really made this harder for me than it should have. Have a great day!

No problem. It happens sometimes. Best of luck!
