Error: Link keyphrase: You’re linking to another page with the words you want this page to rank for. Don’t do that!

I’m actually linking with my main keyword to the exact same page (from home page to home page). I believe in the past it used to be beneficial for SEO. Has that changed?

    Here is the URL: https://walkrichsignatureevents.com/?

    Hello,

The issue “you’re linking to another page with the same focus keyphrase” issue occurs when you are using the same focus keyphrase on multiple pages. Please, refer to this guide to learn more about how to fix this issue.

Thank you for your response. I have read the guide and I know how to fix it. However, I believe this message should not be popping up if I’m linking to the exact same page where the link is coming from (home page to home page). It says “you’re linking to another page” but I’m linking to the same page. Am I misunderstanding something?

Just to clarify, on this page https://walkrichsignatureevents.com/, you’re using the focus keyphrase with an anchor text link that links to the same page https://walkrichsignatureevents.com/? Is this the case?

Hi Michael, thank you for your response. Yes, that is correct. I believe in the past having a couple of links like this was good for SEO. However, a lot has changed in the last few years so I’m curious to know your thoughts.

    Hi @charliewalkrich,

While we cannot comment on whether having a couple of self-referencing links on a page has any SEO benefits, we can say that, in this case, the warning can be ignored since this will not cause any issues.

Got it. Thank you for your response and the information. That sounds good. By any any chance do you know where I could find information reg. pros and cons of having self-referencing links with keywords in anchor text? I’ve looked around and couldn’t find anything so far. If you could point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.

I don’t have any articles about self-referencing links being good or bad since there are valid reasons for having them. Think navigation, footer, skip to section/top, and probably others.

But I can tell you as a site visitor, I am going to think your site is broken if I was reading an article, scrolled down half of a page, clicked a link and was taken back to the top of the very same page. And if that behavior happened on multiple pages on your site, I wouldn’t be inclined to visit your site anymore.

All in all, I’d ask you to think about the value to the visitor or end user. If the link has a purpose, keep it.
