Hi — im trying to work out if there is an easy way to never charge VAT for residents of the websites base country, as thats the guidance the business has received. I would imagine if i set that country to 0% rate, it will continue to update with the accurate value when rates are synced. any guidance would be appreciated ??

The EU VAT Assistant doesn’t update VAT rates automatically, there is no automatic “synchronisation” of the rates. The plugin offers a convenient way to fetch the rates while you’re on the “tax rates” page, but you must click a button manually for that to happen.

This is by design: the rates must be entered and verified by the merchant, manually, as the merchant is solely responsible for applying them correctly. If you enter the VAT rate as 0% for your base country, it will stay that way indefinitely.

Of course, this applies unless you use some other plugin, or service, that updates the rates. However, that’s outside the scope of the EU VAT Assistant, you will have to check with the provider of such service how to skip your custom “0%” rate.
