After updating to Yoast 14.X, we started noticing errors with the way our links were displayed on social media networks such as Facebook and LinkedIn. I have since rolled back the Yoast Plugin to 13.5 as this was the last known version to be working and this seems to have fixed the issue. I think it may have to do with the Open Graph meta data.

Obviously, I’d love to be using the latest and greatest from Yoast since its such a powerful tool so I am hoping you can help diagnose the issue.

    Hello @acgorecki

Did this issue occur with v14.1 of Yoast SEO for WordPress? Facebook and LinkedIn rely on the open graph metatags, so there might have been an issue there. However, we can only check if you have v14.1 of the plugin and if you could provide us with a sample URL so we can check on the open graph tags that are being outputted.

You can learn more about it here — https://yoast.com/help/facebook-sharing-updated-details/

    Hi @mikes41720,

Thanks for replying. I have updated our site the use Yoast v14.1 and we are still noticing the same issue with previews on our social media sites. My site is https://www.intigress.com/

    Thank you!

We checked on the home page in Facebook’s sharing debug tool and see that it is returning an error for the image file of:

Provided og:image URL, https://www.intigress.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/HannahTurnerPhotographyLogo.png could not be processed as an image because it has an invalid content type.

We checked on the URL of the image and this is returning a 404 error:
    https://www.intigress.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/HannahTurnerPhotographyLogo.png

Can you please try checking the image URL and ensuring that the file set for the social preview is valid?

You are correct in that the hyperlinks in your post do not work, but if you copy those urls into a new tab of the browser, they will load. Please try again.

If I’m not mistake, I believe that the open graph meta data needs quotation marks around the urls, and it looks like yoast removes those. See the Open Graph protocol: https://ogp.me/

    Hi,

You identified several issues. We have responded to them below.

    A. You are correct in that the hyperlinks in your post do not work, but if you copy those urls into a new tab of the browser, they will load. Please try again
We went to OpenGraph image here https://www.intigress.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/HannahTurnerPhotographyLogo.png and the image fails to load. See image: https://pasteboard.co/Jane8oW.png.

We are not sure why it is failing we can only say to verify on your site that the opengraph image set for https://www.intigress.com/ is correct.

    B. If I’m not mistake, I believe that the open graph meta data needs quotation marks around the urls, and it looks like yoast removes those.
There is something about the site that is stripping the quotes away. We say this as we do output the quotes as shown in the opengraph protocol link.

Can you try and gather as much information for us as possible? Please perform the following:

    1. Update your non-Yoast plugins and themes.

    2. Confirm you are using the most recent Yoast SEO Premium, v14.2. If you update, does the issue resolve?

    2. If the issue only happens when Yoast is enabled, please Check for conflicts.

If there is a conflict with a plugin or a theme, you can create a new GitHub issue?for our developers. Please report the issue to a third party developer as well.

If you didn’t find any conflicts or errors, we think the issue is specific to your site. We’d need to investigate further but are unable to do so on these forums. You can purchase Yoast SEO Premium?and receive our Premium email support and we can help you further.

It appears that Yoast was having issues with W3 Total Cache. After disabling the plugin, the social issues seem to have stopped, but I wouldn’t really consider this issue resolved.

@acgorecki thanks for your response. Just to clarify, with the latest version of WordPress v5.4.1, with a default theme, and Yoast SEO v14.2 and the latest version of W3 Total Cache enabled, it’s stripping the quotation marks around the URL in the open graph tags? And if you disable W3 Total Cache, the issue resolves itself?

If there is a conflict with a plugin or a theme, you can create a new GitHub issue for our developers. Please report the issue to a third party developer as well.
