• Hello folks, the project seems to be dead and the support forum is unmoderated, so I’m posting this guide here to help you with the errors you are likely experiencing right now (because why else are you here?)

I’ve been using Simply Static on my locally-hosted WAMP stack for a little over a year, but Simply Static stopped working out of nowhere for me this morning.

It turns out that the 5.4.1 update to WordPress core breaks Simply Static.

I downgraded my 5.4.1 WordPress to 5.4.0 by downloading 5.4.0 from www.ads-software.com and copying over (and overwriting) the wp-admin and wp-includes folders.

And that’s it. Simply Static started working again, I lost no data whatsoever, and I won’t be updating my WordPress core anymore because mine is just a local install anyways.

tl;dr If you are running Simply Static on localhost, just try downgrading your WordPress core to 5.4.0.

edit/update: To stop WordPress from updating and also hide its annoying nagging asking me to update, I found and used the plugin “Webcraftic Updates manager”.

    Some more important discoveries:

My exports started failing again, seemingly out of nowhere.

I had to reverse my PHP version to 7.0.33 and everything started working again. So watch out for that, too!

As it turns out, my glitchy WAMP changed my PHP version to 7.3 after I had set it to 7.0, which led to this discovery :/

Thanks for your useful advice enchoseon.

I downgraded PHP to 7.0.33 and rolled back WordPress to 5.40 – the script worked perfectly.

This thread should really be pinned to the top until / unless the plugin gets updated.

@johnp, @enchoseon, try it with php 7.2, it works fine.

Hmmmm, I’m stuck on this as well, I’ve downgraded my wordpress to 5.4 and php to 7.0. But still no luck. Simply Static runs (the grey wheel circles endlessly) but nothing is generated.

The Debug log gets as far as:

[2021-01-26 19:58:05] [class-ss-plugin.php:232] Received request to start generating a static archive
[2021-01-26 19:58:05] [class-ss-archive-creation-job.php:61] Starting a job; no job is presently running
