Text/paragraph formatting

Before I present my query I should set the record straight – I may be a recent newcomer to WP and Elementor but I do have 40 years of hardcore programming experience, from C onward, including a good dose of HTML and CSS. Nowadays only coding for my own needs, i.e. my website.

I have problems formatting text with Elementor. Regular paragraphs are OK, but I’m stumped when editing long sections of text as it appears in novels: No extra lines between paragraphs and with the first line of each of these indented, except for the first line in a chapter or after a break.

I didn’t expect the editor in Elementor to be as rich in functionality as MS Word, but I did expect my manual HTML tweak to work in “Text” view, with one ‘br’ and four ‘nbsp’s. Which it does, but once the text is saved and I need to edit it, all formatting is gone! Not a big problem with a handful of paragraphs, but if you’ve pages of text and have to rewrite/duplicate the code for each paragraph every single time, it gets more than tedious.

Have I missed something obvious? Someone please enlighten me!
