    Hello,

I recently started using Modern Footnotes. Nice plugin and probably the only footnote plugin that has been updated in years.

    The problem:
The plugin doesn’t work very well for me. I’ve looked everywhere but can’t find the answer. The numbers for the footnote are showing up, but whenever I want to trigger one of the footnotes, “javascript:void(0)” shows up.

The footnote content doesn’t show up unless I trigger it manually, which is probably not the way to go. It also opens all the footnotes instead of just the one I clicked on. No errors show up on the page and the newest update has also been installed. I’m currently out of answers.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hi @maxoen ,

I checked the page that you referenced and the footnotes are working for me. I imagine that’s because of the manual triggering code that you added, though. Would it be possible to provide a link without that code?

Typically, the error you’re describing would happen because a JavaScript error in another plugin prevents the Modern Footnotes JavaScript from executing.

    Hello @prismtechstudios,

The manual triggering code has been turned off.

I also installed the plugin “Health Check & Troubleshooting”, and checked off most of the plugins I use, except the ones necessary. It still doesn’t work.

The link is still the same as before and I hope you can help me.

    Thank you in advance,

    Max

@maxoen Thanks! It seems that the JavaScript file for Modern Footnotes isn’t being written out to the page at all. Do you have any plugins that would be suppressing the JavaScript that gets written out to the page, such as plugins that consolidate JavaScript for page speed purposes?

    Hi @prismtechstudios,

Not that I know of. I told you in my last comment that I installed the plugin Health Check and Troubleshooting, which makes it easy to check which plugin causes all the trouble. None of them seem to be the problem.

    Hi @maxoen ,

So, to confirm, have you used the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin’s “Troubleshoot” link to make only Modern Footnotes active, without any other plugins running? If that’s the case, can you preview your site in the default twenty twenty WordPress theme to see if the footnotes work then? That will isolate whether there’s an issue with the theme.

    Hi @prismtechstudios,

I’m sorry for not responding sooner. I discovered the problem and fixed it. The reason why it wasn’t working was because there was no wp_footer(); in my footer.

Thank you for your help. Solved!

I am having the same problem where footnotes are not working (I see java script void when I hover on a footnote number). Please help!

    Hi @smilkova ,

You’d have to post the URL for me to take a look. The most likely issue is that there is a JavaScript error being caused by another plugin or the theme that you are using.

    Best,
    Sean
