Regex redirect impacting SEO?
-
Hey John, thank you for your fantastic plugin. We use (and recommend) it as our default to everyone.
Our question is, I hope, an easy one for you.
Currently, we’ve set redirects with some old links like this:
FROM: /asx-shares/(.*)
TO: /asx/$1/Example outcome: /asx-shares/[tag-page-1] –> /asx/[tag-page-1]
We’ve set it to regex, and as 301. This way, Google and Bing will see the new URL and note that the old URL has moved permanently.
We have not used an anchor (^).
The problem we’re having is that Google now believes we’ve redirected the NEW (or target) URL. It says it was not indexed but not because of error, it was redirected.
The pages in questions were have been crawled this week and we’ve checked all of our sitemaps.
We don’t expect you to ‘solve’ our SEO crisis (haha) but if can note anything obvious or if you have come across this before that would be great.
We run on Flywheel servers, so we don’t use .htaccess but instead operate on Nginx.
Cheers!
