[Plugin: WP Smush.it] how to smush all images

There isn’t currently a function to do that, mostly because I wouldn’t want to put that much strain on Yahoo!’s servers.

If you have a lot of images you might find this bash script useful: https://gist.github.com/211082 It does the same thing as the WP plugin.

Can someone suggest a program that will optimize a batch of images on your local computer? I’m a little afraid of running something like the script recommended above. So, I was thinking I could download all my images, run a local program on the images, and then upload them back to the server, overwriting the old images.

Any problems with this idea?

That script DO optimize local images by using two programs…
Well, it’s true trat’s a bash script, and if your S.O. is not unix like and you miss that utilities, of course it is uneuseful for you!

If you’re uncomfortable with the command line I’d stay away from the script. Never run anything on your server you don’t understand.

That said, I use it all the time.

Here is how to smush all images. Install plugin AJAX Thumbnail Rebuild and run it. Since it regenerates all images, WP Smush.it will be used for each image. Note that since this plugin uses AJAX, you shouldn’t get “out of memory” error so you can smush huge number of images.

Also note that if you have previously smushed images, statistics for them will be lost (you’ll get “No savings” message for them).

I wish the WP-SmushIt plugin author would update his plugin to fix the out of /wp-content/ bug and add this functionality. Oh well, it’s free so can’t complain.
