Possible to remove “www” in settings of existing site?

I have to clean up an existing that has “www” in WP and site address URL and and also using SSL. So current URL is https://www.example.com/

I’m getting a “Avoid landing page redirects” warning at GTMetrix with following details:

Avoid landing page redirects for the following chain of redirected URLs.

https://example.com/
https://example.com/
https://www.example.com/

I don’t really know whether this is related to the “www” in URL but also wanting to know whether it is safe to remove it under settings>general section.
