Classic editor text mode reverts to visual mode

    Text mode doesn’t “stick”. When I create a new post, it always opens in visual mode. I can switch to text mode and paste in some text. When I save, the editor reverts to visual mode. When I switch back to text mode, the text has changed, with extraneous <br />’s and non-breaking spaces added.

    I am a new administrator; another administrator (who created the WordPress installation several years / WP versions ago) does not have this issue; when he creates a post it always opens and stays in text mode.

    Is there some setting that I’ve missed that will keep me in text mode after saving a draft? Or (better) that will always start new posts in text mode?
