Sort order in latest topics view

Having enabled the “latest topics” view the other day, my users have noticed that the sort order seems somewhat strange. It appears the topics are always sorted by their original creation date, although the “last post” information shows the correct information. So the information in the last column appears to be randomly sorted – the newest post may be way down the list, below many others the user has already read.

Can this be fixed or is there a workaround?
