    Greetings

    WP 5.5.1
    All plug-ins up to date.

I attempted to create a new web page and received an error. After deactivating/reactivation plug-ins, I learned the Custom Sidebar plug-in was causing the issue. I removed the plug-in and attempted to download and install a new copy from the WP plug-in repository.

    I am now receiving

Installing Plugin: Custom Sidebars – Dynamic Widget Area Manager 3.2.3
    Downloading installation package from https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/plugin/custom-sidebars.3.2.3.zip…

    Unpacking the package…

    Installing the plugin…

    Could not copy file. /home/ah973277/public_html/wp-content/plugins/custom-sidebars/customsidebars.php

    Plugin installation failed.

YIKES…I have not managed to resolve re-installation. Any suggestions?

  • Hello @fprasuhn ,

I’ve tried to replicate this issue on my site and I wasn’t able to.

Can you check if you can install other plugins on your site? If you can install other plugins without any errors, then please use the FTP account for your site and check if you have custom-sidebars directory in the wp-content/plugins directory – if yes, delete it and then try to install plugin again.

Let me know how it goes.

    kind regards,
    Kasia

Thank you for your quick response. I attempted to download other plug ins. I found the service will not allow me to do so. I have the ISP working to resolve the matter.

    Thank you, again.

    Greetings:

After working with my site and the ISP technicians I am still having issues any time the Custom Sidebar plug-in is loaded. I am at a loss on how to remedy the situation. I do hope that you are able to provide assistance. I used the Custom Sidebar plug-in for about a 1/3 of my pages. Your guidance and assistance is greatly appreciated.

    Hi @fprasuhn

Thank you for response but I’m slightly confused so let’s make sure that we’re on the same side.

You can install Custom Sidebars and it’s returning error during installation – that part is clear. But you confirmed that you also can’t install other plugins and then mentioned that “any time the Custom Sidebar is loaded”.

I’m not sure how to understand that: is it that you managed to install Custom Sidebar or you have it on other sites and when it’s installed/active you cannot install other plugins – but you can install them if Custom Sidebar is not on site?

Or you can’t install Custom Sidebars and other plugins independently, no matter what?

Also, have you confirmed that you actually do have available storage space on your hosting account/server?

    Kind regards,
    Adam

    Story line in bullet points:

I opened the wp-admin portal to edit pages.

I attempted to edit pages and received error message that pages were not available and to contact administrator. WP debug link provided.

Troubleshooting by deactivating plug ins showed that Custom Sidebar was involved in preventing pages to open for editing.

Custom Sidebar was changed inactive. I was then able to access pages to edit.

Attempted to download new Custom Sidebar and install.

    Received installation failure posted above.

    Placed first posting noted above.

Support response asked me to attempt downloading other plug ins.

I could not download any plug ins (original Custom Sidebar was inactive but still loaded).

I worked with my ISP support. Deleting Custom Sidebar from site allowed me to download various plug ins.

I downloaded and installed Custom Sidebar. The inability to access pages re-appeared and I could no longer download and install plug ins.

I deactivated and uninstalled Custom Sidebar plug in. My challenges were resolved so I could edit pages and download other plug ins.

In short, as long as I do not have Custom Sidebar installed on my site, I can work with my pages normally.

    I hope this helps…fred

    Hello @fprasuhn,

Could you help me with the PHP version you are currently on to try and replicate the same on my end?

Meanwhile, you can also manually try to download the plugin from
https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/custom-sidebars/ and then try to install it manually on your site to check if that works? Here is how you can do it:
    https://premium.wpmudev.org/docs/using-wordpress/installing-wordpress-plugins/#manually-installing-plugins-using-ftp

Do make sure you take a site backup before taking this step. Looking forward to hearing from you on it.

    Thank you,

    Hi @fprasuhn

I hope you are doing well.

We haven’t heard from you in a while, I’ll go and mark this thread as resolved.

However, feel free to let us know if you have any additional question or problem.
