Hi there. In vary rare cases, I notice in the analytics report that some page titles are displayed in Chinese before the separator. This does not impact my website performance, but I am curious why this is happening.

Initially reported here since I also have the TSF plugin installed.

Hi @saowp I’ll be happy to have a look into this. Any chance you could send us a system report (see https://matomo.org/faq/wordpress/how-do-i-find-and-copy-the-system-report-in-matomo-for-wordpress/) and a screenshot of the titles displayed in chinese or a description where this is happening? Eg do you mean the browser title or maybe a “page title” in the “page title report”? You can send it to us to wordpress at matomo.org

Generally Matomo isn’t translating anything but only recording / tracking the actual browser title that was used in a page. Is your site being used in China maybe?

Thanks, @tsteur . Yes this is the Behaviour – Page titles report. After looking through the logs, I see languages other than Chinese too. All these visits seem to be coming from Google search, on Chrome Mobile (Android), so @cybr ‘s hunch here could be correct. I will email you the information shortly.

@saowp thank you for sending the system report. I’ve read the link you are referring to but would have expected this applies only to the titles in the search results page but not to the page title when actually viewing the page?

What could happen though is that people maybe use “Translation” feature in a browser and the page title gets translated maybe? In this case there wouldn’t be anything that we could do AFAIK. What percentage would you say have translated page titles?

@tsteur It’s really low, <0.01%. You may be right about the user enabling browser translation.

I am curious about the intent and utility of the page title report. Would different pages with the same title show up as a single entry in this report? This translation behaviour could be useful at the time of a higher level relook of the reports generated by Matomo.

I can definitely reproduce it using the translation feature. As it’s really low < 0.01% I’m quite certain this is what is happening.

    > Would different pages with the same title show up as a single entry in this report?

Yes. Different pages with different URLs but the same title would appear as one page in the page titles report.

BTW if you wanted to learn more about the visitors that visited these translated pages there is the “segmented visits log” feature when you hover a page title see https://ibb.co/bWcTJ2x You can then see where they come from, how they navigated through your website and every action they took. This might give also more insights into what is happening.
