Add 1st image as thumbnail image for category page, if featured image not added

  • Hi, I want to make the 1st image the thumbnail image for the category or archive page, when the featured image is not added.

    How can I do this without a plugin? Most of them are quite old and haven’t updated since then.

    Please help me here.

    what is the 1st image ? Do you mean the featured image of the first post in the archive?

    Hi, considering I didn’t add the featured image using the “featured image in the documents tab”. But I have added some images in the blog using the “image block”.

    Normally in categories archive, if we didn’t add any featured image, nothing is shown.

    So what I want is, if I don’t add any featured image using the featured image section in the documents tab, I want the 1st image (i.e. the image which I will add using Image Block) to be considered by the category, and the category archive must display that particular image.

    And this must happen when no featured image is added using the featured image section.

    Sorry i am a little confused.
    The Categories Archive are not editable pages. And neither do they support Featured Images without a plugin.
    So where is this Image Block being added ?

    @diggeddy s/he wants the first image added in every post to be the featured image for that post in the archive page.

    I also found this one: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/quick-featured-images/

    The code to do something like this is quite complex and usually hit-or-miss. A plugin is definitely the way to go.
