    I can put footnotes in just fine. But the number in the text disrupts the leading of the text—creating uneven spacing of the lines. How can I either shrink the number or lower its height?

    Shrinking the footnote referrers beyond what superscripting already implies exposes them to the risk of becoming illegible. By contrast, lower their height and make them sit on the baseline in normal size may be preferred e.g. in US-English publishing practice.

    We are sorry that an option disabling the superscript tags isn’t currently available in the plugin. For a quick fix—that would be overwritten at the next update—please replace sup with span in wp-content/plugins/footnotes/templates/public/footnote.html

    Baseline footnote referrers also need balanced outfit, most currently [ and ] or ( and ), in the plugin’s settings under Customize > Around the inline footnote referrers > Before the footnote referrer, and > After the footnote referrer.

    The usual fix when superscript disrupts interlinear spacing is to add a line height to the paragraph style of the active theme should this be lacking support for superscript, given basically the same would occur when superscripting ordinal indicators in accordance with style guides.

    Hopefully this formatting option will be available soon. We apologize for the trouble while working to fix reported bugs ASAP.

    Thank you a lot for your feedback helping improve the Footnotes plugin!

    This is being fixed in upcoming v2.1.1, currently in preview as 2.1.1d10 available at https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/plugin/footnotes.zip

    Both the superscript formatting becomes an option (enabled by default), and a style rule is added known to fix the line height above superscript.

    The new setting is under the Customize tab > Around the inline footnote referrers (heading to become shorter and more to the new point when catching up localization). The first item is the new select box ‘Enable superscript footnote referrers’ (should be ‘for footnote referrers), that you may wish to set to ‘No’. Just below are the two settings for what shall stand before, what after (new default is ‘[‘ and ‘]’, but that will be valid for new installs).

    As of the added style rule for superscript referrers (not other superscripts), it’s a line height zero, that lets the glyph(s) stand but adds no extra height above.

    Thank you a lot for requesting this line height fix! It’s also improving the plugin’s versatility with respect to style guides, some of which specify superscript, others baseline referrers!

    I cannot find this setting (using 2.5.10)…

    @thosch66,

    Thank you for reading this topic and reaching out because the tab has been renamed. It’s now the “Referrers and tooltips” tab. The “Display footnote referrers in superscript” setting is in the second metabox “Referrer typesetting and formatting”.

    The reason is that after the “Customize” tab was added in v1.3.0 and was entirely dedicated to Custom?CSS code, it was used later on for tooltip configuration, so that its label became misleading and was changed to “Configure” for v2.1.6, in an attempt to fix the problem. Hopefully, being called since 2.2.0 “Referrers and tooltips”, it’s been got right.

    Best regards.
