Spam and a really dumb question

I know nothing whatever about blogs and associated posts and forms and the like.
But about 5 years ago I built a site using WordPress. A static site – no input or comments from viewers. Just display of images and associated text. Read-only. Simplicity!!
For years the site has done its job.
In recent weeks I started to get an email from my hosting site saying:
“Currently 5 comments are waiting for approval. Please visit the moderation panel:”
I go to the hosting site and find some spam-like messages there.
How did they get there? When I view my site there doesn’t appear to be any input mechanism – apart from an email address. What am I missing?
Yes, I told you it was a dumb question but it has me confused!!
