On the Donate/Join page at https://nwswans.org/donate/ I have a button titled DOWNLOAD FORM that works fine–the appropriate document downloads when the button is clicked. BUT when people try to email that download link (https://nwswans.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/member-power-sheet.doc) to someone, and the recipient clicks on the link, they get a “This Page Does Not Seem to Exist.” The console shows the following error: “member-power-sheet.doc:1 Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 ()”

Is this expected behavior? How would I make the document download from the URL alone? It seems odd that the console error doesn’t show the full URL, but I’m not sure if it’s just truncating.

    Thanks!

  • Hello Jeremy,

    Your direct link is wrong.

    The correct link should be:

    https://nwswans.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Member-Power-sheet.doc

Note the upper-case M and P. Most websites run on Linux servers, where file names are case-sensitive. So Member-Power-sheet.doc (the correct file name) is an entirely different file from member-power-sheet.doc (a different but non-existing file).

    I hope that helps!

    Hi George,

Thanks for the reply! It was seeming to load for me when I first tried it with or without caps in the name if I typed the URL in, but I suspect it was just using a cached url or something. I added a 2nd copy of the file without caps in the name and it’s working now.

    Thanks again!
