Setting up a subscription site

    I’ve searched and searched and failed to find a definitive guide on how to do the following and it’s driving me mad!

    I want to set up a subscription site but am using it more for membership to an association than membership to the actual site, although I will give the members the option to log in so they can post comments.

    Thought this would be straightforward enough but find it’s a minefield.

    I can find numerous plugins, but haven’t found one that does all or outlines how to do the following:

    1. Join the Association: option to sign up and then pay with paypal.
    2. Once they’ve signed up a recurring yearly charge is automatically taken.
    3. Place a log in/register area in the topbar / sidebar (preferably a self contained widget)
    4. Let’s them log in and comment once they have signed up.

    But when I try to implement a plugin, it’s like I’m missing an obvious step that I should know about, but don’t.

    I can find solutions to some of the above but not all of them and the main problem I’m finding is putting in a log in box. I guess I need a step by step but again I can’t find that.

    I would be willing to buy a plugin but have been totally stung in the past so am reluctant to go down that route.

    Anyway, can anyone point me in the right direction or give me advice on how to go about this before I lose me mind?

  • 1. You either need an ecommerce plugin or you can just generate a button on PayPal and put the button code into your site. You could create their account on the site after their payment clears. Keep in mind that not all payments clear immediately on Paypal.

    2. Paypal can be set up to make recurring charges.

    3. Sidebar Login plugin works great

    4. In the Discussion settings you can check off that people have to be logged in to comment.

    What ecommerce plugin would you recommend?

    Didn’t know paypal could be set up for recurring charges – nice one.

    Will try the sidebar plugin now ??

    I like eShop for several reasons but if you only have one product that does not require shipping, you are probably better off just generating a payment button on the Paypal site and putting the code into your site.

    I’ve never done it myself but I have seen Paypal buttons on other people’s sites that let you sign up for a recurring payment.

    Yeah, but as it’s a association site, I need to be able to put up a form that they fill in with specific details on the sign up. Then, pay their subscription and then that all ‘talks’ to wordpress and let’s them log in

    See I’m trying to integrate it all into one and make our lives easier. Not easy, as I’m finding out.

    Log in is now integrated and looks good, so happy with that, now just need to get the sign up figured out.

    Any other thoughts?

    This plugin is hot off the presses and may be able to do what you want.

    User Role Subscriptions

    Note that is says you will also need a plugin that allows you to control user access to content. User Access Manager is one. Avoid the Role Manager plugin as you can do irreversible damage with it and cause conflicts with other plugins that reference the roles. The User Role Subscriptions plugin does seem to give you a mechanism to collect recurring payments though, and it’s simple enough to turn a user’s access to content on and off with User Access Manager.
