Post latest entry and alternating excerpts

Well, what I want is to show my latest entry. That’s not a problem, surely. But what I want is to show the latest, say five, entries below. Not the entire entry, but just an excerpt (an excerpt shows the first .. words, right?). And I’d like the colors to alternate. And that is just a tiny step too far for my humble brain. Please help, anyone?
