We just started getting this error when someone tries to purchase a class on our website. The Simple PayPal Shopping cart has been working very well for us for a few years now. All of a sudden the cart stopped working and we are getting this message:

“Error! The price field may have been tampered. Security check failed.
If this site uses any caching, empty the cache then try again.”

We cleared the cache a couple of times but the error is not going away. What can we do to fix this?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hi,

The following error is what I see on the above URL.

Failed to set referrer policy: The value ” is not one of ‘no-referrer’, ‘no-referrer-when-downgrade’, ‘origin’, ‘origin-when-cross-origin’, ‘same-origin’, ‘strict-origin’, ‘strict-origin-when-cross-origin’, or ‘unsafe-url’. The referrer policy has been left unchanged
    .

Have you updated your site to WordPress 5.6? If you have, have you also installed the following plugin? This plugin might help you troubleshoot the error above.

Let me know how you go.

    Thank you

Thank you for the reply. Yes, we’ve installed WordPress 5.6 but I did not install the plugin you provided until now. It did not help with the error I’m getting.

“Error! The price field may have been tampered. Security check failed.
If this site uses any caching, empty the cache then try again.”

If I revert to the previous version of WP would that clear it? I’m also seeing a message that the php might be out of date, but we have 7.3.2 running on the site.

Also, we did not have any deprecation warnings for any of the plugins.

Hi, do you have a cache plugin running in your site or server? If you do make sure you don’t cache the shopping cart page.

If I revert to the previous version of WP would that clear it?

It might fix the issue in your site if the above comment about the cache does not apply to you. There are a few bugs in WordPress 5.6.

If I revert to the previous version of WP would that clear it? I’m also seeing a message that the php might be out of date, but we have 7.3.2 running on the site.

Is you server running PHP 7.3.25 or PHP 7.3.2?

    Regards

I have the cache plugin deactivated. Still getting the error.

    Server says it’s running 7.3.2

Something I just noticed is that the error isn’t appearing on every post. I’ve tried to see if there is a pattern and I just don’t see it.

You should upgrade to version PHP 7.3.25.

Try carrying out a test and adding the shopping cart to a new test post. Let me know what happens.

    Thank you

I tried to change to 7.3.25 on the server but the host only has changes in full versions. The next choice is 7.4. I will call them to see if they can change it to 7.3.25 on their end.

Here is the link to a new test post. I’ve added the shopping cart twice. Once from a post that does not work, another from a post that does work and a 3rd one using the WP Cart shortcode button in the editor tools.

I’ve been going through all of our posts that do not work and adding the shortcode using the shortcode button. They are working once I do that, but what is confusing is that there is nothing different from the original to the one using the shortcode. I believe the owner of the website is adding the shortcode via copy and paste from another post and then changing the information. This is how she’s always done it.

Can you tell me if there is a reason for it?
Do I still need to keep the Enable jQuery plugin?
Should I still upgrade to php 7.3.25?

    Hi,

I believe the owner of the website is adding the shortcode via copy and paste from another post and then changing the information. This is how she’s always done it.

Find out from your client how are they adding the shortcode. Also inform them what is the best method so that they don’t run into this issue again.

Can you tell me if there is a reason for it?

The reason I described above. The copying and pasting of the shortcode is probably casing this issue.

Do I still need to keep the Enable jQuery plugin?

No, if you know all your plugins and theme are 100% compatible with WordPress 5.6.

Should I still upgrade to php 7.3.25?

It is important to make sure your server is running the latest PHP 7.3.x version. Eventually you will need to update your server to PHP 7.4.x. PHP 8.0 is out already but WordPress is not yet up to date with PHP 8.0.

The following link helps you to know which versions are supported and which ones are no longer supported.

    https://www.php.net/supported-versions.php

Let me know if the above helps you.

    Kind regards

It is working great now that we are using the WP cart shortcode button. Thank you so much for all your help.

I am glad to know that you managed to solve your issue ??

    Enjoy the plugin.

This problem also occurs on WP5.6 with PHP 7.4.13 when your product name has a & in its title.
I was using the plugin with the Product name [wp_cart_button name=”Feathers & Trumpets” price=”16.00″] until Sept 30, in October A lady tried to buy a book and then called to say that the page was not working.
I reviewed this post and updated to WP5.6 with PHP 7.4.13 and it still failed and it drove me crazy because this code was working from another page:[wp_cart_button name=”Women of the Pine Tree State” price=”15.00″]
Today I looked at the html code and saw that & was replaced with & [wp_cart_button name=”Feathers & Trumpets” price=”16.00″]. So I substituted “and” in place of the & and the page worked correctly.
S I think that you will find that some change in your code changed in an update around late September that made the [wp_cart_button name=”Feathers & Trumpets” price=”16.00″] no longer work. So any product with an & in its name will cause this same error. Happy hunting for the problem.

hey I am having a problem with my site shopping cart. might be after wp5.6 upgrade. I read through this thread but don’t have a clue what the answer is. I haven’t changed any shortcodes or done anything to the site in a long time. my php is updated. So would like to know what i need to do to fix this. It’s urgent, so any help would be appreciated. This is the error. “Error! The price field may have been tampered. Security check failed.
If this site uses any caching, empty the cache then try again.” Thanks

never mind i figured it out you need to check this in settings. Using complex characters for the product name can trigger the error: The price field may have been tampered. Security check failed. This option will stop that check and remove the error.

    Thanks @techctn
That solved the problem for me when I had a “&” in the shortcode

It seems that the shortcode has changed over time, can you confirm this @mbrsolution ?

I had the above error so I tried the WP Cart Shortcode button and it gave me a different shortcode to the one that was previously working.

    Old shortcode:

[wp_cart:The Early Years CD (including UK p&p):price:5.99:end]

    Current shortcode:

    [wp_cart_button name="The Early Years CD (including UK p&p)" price="5.99"]

Perhaps not using the ‘&’ works for the old shortcode, but ‘&’ is working with the new shortcode.
