My WP website was set up in 2013. I’ve found text in my database referring to Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and the 2020 WordPress Annual Survey. I didn’t write that text. Can WP write code or text into a database after a initial installation, and if so is there any reason why WP would update a database with current events?

  • Hello,

These sound like good candidates for Comment Spam. The easiest way to find this out is to log into your WordPress and, using the left-hand navigation, click on “Comments”. Spambots love to target old post comments to submit their random content. If you don’t use post comments you can disable them under Settings > Reading. Kinsta has a good article on Disabling Comments. You may also need to revisit older posts to disable comments or install a blocker plugin.

The techniques here will remove some of the constraints that you run into with functions such as get_posts() and wp_list_categories(), allowing you to tailor queries to your particular needs.
