I was recently hired to troubleshoot performance issues on my client’s web server. They are using WordPress installed via Plesk and updated to version 2.9.1 in December using the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin. Since then, performance on the Admin pages has been deteriorating. For example, merely clicking update on an open article/page after making no changes at all causes the admin site to lock up for 30-60 seconds or more while it loads. What’s weird is that performance on sites they didn’t upgrade and are still running the old version (2.3) is also suffering.

I checked and Pingback is already disabled on all the sites. I also tried temporarily disabling Ping-o-matic, but that didn’t help either. I also enabled slow query logging on the database, but nothing is popping up there, either. Rebooting the server didn’t help.

What else can I do to fix this problem?

I’ve been having the same problem too for the past few days. I’m on version 2.9.2. It either takes 2-3 minutes to load the site or the admin to edit, or to post an entry or it doesn’t load at all. Today it has really been locking up constantly.

I’ve called my hosting provider (Verio) many times on this issue and they say it’s not a server issue–it has to do with WordPress. They won’t assist me because I’m not using their very old version of WordPress.

I’ve re-installed the WordPress files according to the re-installation directions; that has not helped.

    Any ideas?

I’m glad to hear that reinstalling WordPress didn’t help, because I was dreading doing that and wanted to avoid that step. Has anyone else had any success dealing with this sort of problem?

I had a similar problem with slow performance on new or editing post / pages and I tracked the problem back to a plug in called Keyword-Statistics. It’s an auto generator of keywords etc from your post and a lot of my posts had a lot of information in them so Keyword-Statistics was working overtime with the database and generally being a pain in the arse.
Once it was uninstalled , hey presto everything was back to normal.
Other than that can’t help if the problem is else where
