Just to see if it helps if WP edits your htaccess.

I second the “Try switching to default and back to custom.” motion. You can make this simple by going to Settings > Permalinks, then click to Save Permalinks.

Are you on yahoo hosting? This happened to me and its something having to do with how yahoo sets up the server. Maybe its your host?

I just started a new wordpress site and with 2.9.2 my permalinks work in default, but i wanted it on the month and name setting that the control panel offers. Guess it looks like this /%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%/

anyways im just trying to make new pages like “contact” or “about”

    so https://www.mydomain.com/contact/ is a 404 error

but if i switch to default https://www.mydomain.com/?page_id=23 works fine

    Any Ideas?
