When I set up 2FA for my website I have an issue.

Users with 2FA can login as normal, without issue.
However, if a single account (e.g an admin account) is set up with 2FA it becomes impossible for all other accounts without 2FA to login.

The login screen seems normal, users enter, username, password, and complete Google Captcha (V2). However, even with a correct username and pass entered and a successful Captcha, the login will be rejected.
This does not occur with accounts set up for 2FA

This is an issue as my site is a membership site so has lots of users logging in. But I do not wish to provide/force them with 2FA as there would be no benefit for them and it will end up causing headaches.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello @jonpolley and thanks for reaching out to us!

It almost sounds like a table is holding a bad value for 2FA. Could you screenshot your Wordfence > Login Security > Settings page for me to review?

Also, can you send a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com? You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

    Thanks!

Hi @wfadam thanks for your response.
I have emailed the diagnostic page as requested. And have emailed the requested screenshots there too.

    Thanks

Thanks for sending all the information @jonpolley

I noticed in the diagnostic that you use reCaptcha by BestWebSoft. In the past, we have seen this cause issues with our 2FA. Not in the context, you have mentioned but it has caused the text to display incorrect block reasons on the login page.

To test, we could disable that plugin and see if the issue is still happening.

Let me know what you find!

    Thanks!

    @wfadam

Thank you so much! nailed it in one. It was ReCaptcha by BestWebSoft that was causing the issue.

I deactivated it and could login as normal as with a “user” account without 2FA and was challenged with 2FA with an admin account.
As soon as I reactivated the ReCaptcha plugin the issue came back.

So, now all I need to do is decide if I want to go with ReCaptcha V3 which is integrated in WordFence or find another plugin to allow me to keep using V2.

I do prefer V2 to V3. So something for me to think about.

Anyway, once again, thanks for your help!
