Updating old, out of date website

  • I have inherited an outdated club website. I need to update to the current wordpress version. This is the message I am seeing:

    “An updated version of WordPress is available.
    You cannot update because WordPress 5.6 requires PHP version 5.6.20 or higher. You are running version 5.3.29.”

    This is way over my head and I would like someone to help me so I can go in and update the website.

  • You need to use a newer php version, there should be an option at your webhoster’s front end. If not ask your webhoster to set a higher php version for your domain/webspace. This is something only you are able to do, since you need to log-in at your webhosts website to do so.

    It might be hidden under domains / php settings / php user
