I’ve got a question about the forum. I’m wondering about all the multitudes of posts in each of the categories that are very old and still around.

At the top and bottom of the screen in each of the sections of the Support Forum, there are little icons that help users to switch the page number that they are viewing. On one side we have a “1”…. and on the other side there is a number (generally) in the 2,000 to 5,000 range. In many sections, there are posts that are from many years ago, and MANY WordPress versions ago.

So, my question is: Does the Forum have any “clean-up policy”?

In general, the topics from those old pages fall into several categories:

    1. Questions that got only one post and then died.
    2. Bad topics that got missed, or moderated but not deleted
    3. Duplicate topics (from the same OP)
    4. Topics with duplicate issues
    5. Topics that are irrelevant for current WP versions
    6. (I’m sure that I missed some, there could be others)

Of course, there may be some that were answered, are useful, are relevant, and should be kept around. But for every topic that fits that description, there are probably ten (or more) that are outdated, faulty, and useless. (Just to make myself clear, this is not an attack on ANY ONE. I am simply observing that there are posts that may no longer be useful.)

Needless to say, is there a current policy which would allow certain classes of forum officials to evaluate very old posts for relevancy?
And if not, should this be added to the “to do” list for improving this forum?

I am very curious to see what other people have to say on this issue!

It has been discussed but I don’t think any formal policy has been formulated yet.

    esmi, thanks for replying!

How long has this discussion been going on? I’m sure that it is a weighty matter (deleting items off the forum), I would just like to know.

    Thanks again.

Moving this to the feedback section as it is more relevant there.

A purge might be a good idea, but only if it coincided with a substantial upgrade to stop the same thing happening again, IMHO.

Thanks mrmist! Sorry, I wasn’t quite sure which would be the best location for this thread.

What do you mean by a “substantial upgrade,” though? Isn’t the problem with either:
    Bad posts
    Unanswered posts
    Irrelevant posts
or a combination of the above?

What kind of an upgrade would fix that problem?
I would like to understand what you mean, and what your idea would entail.

    Thank you

All of those things are symptoms, I think. The problem is that the version of the forum software being used doesn’t really cope very well with the volume of traffic. So more stuff goes un-solved than might otherwise be the case. An upgrade that added functionality even as simple as a “last post” time on the forum menu would improve things no end.

Ah, I see! So, not an improvement that would prevent people from posting bad material, but instead an update to the forum software that would allow people to detect and answer good questions and more effectively moderate bad threads.

    I really like it!

Is there an active discussion going on concerning various improvements to be made to the forum software?

I just noticed this today while looking at the new sticky about Encrypted Themes:
mrmist is now designated as a Forum Janitor.

I am guessing that this has to do with a plan to clean up the forums!
I’m so glad to see that there are improvements being made to keep the forums clear of junk.

If that is what you are doing, mrmist, than thank you very much for your useful service!

Keep up the good work, everyone!

P.S. The sticky that I mentioned can be found here.

Haha.. That’s really just me playing about. But rest assured that if there is any grand purging to be done, I’ll be standing in line with my broom.
