    Since the last few days, I have been trying to figure out but been unsuccessful. Right after clearing Cache from Autoptimize, the whole website breaks, the CSS goes away and it’s all text on the website. I’ve tried clearing site cache, de-activating plugin, even deleting plugin from the WordPress File manager, but the website doesn’t go back to normal. All I can do is restore to the version that was working fine, so now I can’t update the website, nor can I go back because I’d published posts on the last backup date.

    when clearing AO’s cache (which should not be needed frequently) you will also have to make sure any page cache you or your hoster might have is cleared. chances are that you have more then one if clearing site cache doesn’t help (I see x-proxy-cache-info DT:1 in the HTTP reponse header, which indicates a caching proxy).

    additionally enalbing the “404 fallback”-option might help the as a workaround as well.

    hope this helps,

    Hey Frank,

    Even after enabling the 404 fallback option and clearing site cache doesn’t help. As soon as I clear on AO’s clear cache, no matter what I do after that, the CSS doesn’t come back to the page.

    OK, so when the site is broken;
    * are the Autoptimizes resources (JS/ CSS) referred to in the HTML source?
    * are the Autopitmized resources returning an “internal server error” (50x)?
    * are the Autopitmized resources returning a “not found error” (404)?
    * are the Autoptimized resources returning as JS/ CSS or as HTML or empty?

    re. the 404 fallback not working; you might have another plugin also interfering with 404’s, in that case you’ll have to choose between AO handling it’s own 404’s or whatever that other plugin is doing?

    Hi,

    I think the resources are returning as HTML. Only the HTML part of the website loads and none of the CSS.

    is they are returning HTML then that is a 404, meaning the page’s HTML is containing references to autoptimized resources that were removed. if the HTML is “live” and the links are added by AO, they can’t be missing in action, so the logical conclusion is the HTML is served from a (stale) cache somewhere after all I’m afraid gainingtactics.

    I would strongly suggest to check with your host, this looks, swims and quacks like a page caching duck, so it probably is a quacking page cache … ??
