I’m having trouble updating from v1.16.48 to the latest version. The update downloads OK, but it won’t install. An Internal Server Error ensues (500s/501s are famously unhelpful, as we know).

I’m new to WP/Apache, but am generally familiar with hosting server management. How can I set about troubleshooting this?

    I’m running on Win10 20H2.

    Thanks,

    Hi,

Apologies for the delay over the weekend.

A ‘500 Internal Server error’ is a generic error code that indicates that ‘something’ has gone wrong on the server itself.

You could contact your hosts/server admin and ask them to check the PHP error logs. The logs should contain further information on the exact error that is occurring.

Thank you, but I was under the impression that discussions in this forum are limited to those hosting their own WP instances (which is the case here). Please correct me if I am mistaken.

In any event, I was able to work around this by manually downloading the latest version and uploading it to my WP site.

And while doing so I think I spotted the source of the problem. The manual download came in fits and starts, requiring me to restart it several times. Apparently there’s something amiss at the plugin’s download server.

I think the .ZIP file arrived corrupted or incomplete when I used WP’s plugin update module. In fact, in one of my failed attempts the reported error was a cUrl timeout. That pretty well cinches it, I believe.

The manual update went off without a hitch. Even my settings were preserved, which was nice.

But I’d like to avoid this again for the future. I’m not concerned about having the latest version of this plugin; are you aware of a way to turn off update checks for a given plugin?

    Hi Jeff,

Yes, you can enable/disable auto updates in the Plugins section of your WordPress site.

    Thanks,
