From .com to .org: adding new theme: how?

    I have a wordpress.com blog. Have things set up on Bluehost now w/ a domain. Have found a theme I want to use to change my existing blog to a magazine type layout.

    I have no clue what I am doing as far as the sequence of migrating files to Bluehost. Do I upload the theme to Bluehost and then rework my website using the new theme?

    I have uploaded my existing wordpress.com files to Bluehost and I have downloaded 2.9.2. What do I do next?

    I am utterly confused. When I go live with my “new” website, I want it to be in the new theme format.

    Sorry for being so ignorant about all this, but I do follow instructions well and would appreciate some advice.

  • Do you have your site up and running with the default theme?

    Activating a new theme after you’ve installed it is as simple as clicking on the “activate” button.

    You may want to save switching to the new theme for last and actually port the website across to Bluehost first. Once you have it up and running you can activate the theme as batrachoid has instructed.

    1. Follow the five minute install. Get wordpress running on bluehost first.
    2. Export your data from wordpress.com using the XML export option.
    3. Import your data into your new installation.
    4. Upload your theme and activate it.

    That’s one way anyway.

    Okay! I understand everything you all advised! Really appreciate it.

    Now, if I could only get into the default blog. I can’t log on to my wordpress default blog. It is rejecting even my username.

    But hey – when I do figure out what the problem is w/ log-in – I now know what to do next!

    When installing wordpress, you should have been sent an email with a randomly generated password for a user called “admin.” That will get you in and you can create a new user with administrative capabilities and give it your old username from your previous blog.
