    Hi friend at Blubrry,

We are working on getting transcriptions done of our many of our podcast episodes and adding those to the WordPress Post (for SEO and user-friendliness). Republishing those posts would be helpful for SEO, but if I do that, will it mess up the podcast feed in podcast directories.

For example, if I’m on episode 10 now, and republish episode 1 with a transcript, will iTunes show episode 1 as a new episode?

    Thank you!

You don’t want to republish. Simply edit the blog post and update it when you are done adding whatever text you want to. Don’t do a new post and republish.

Thanks Mike – if I change the date (so it shows up at the top of my blog feed) then update it, will that impact the podcast feed on the podcast directories?

Whatever date you pick, is where that will be in the feed and on the blog. So, to directly answer, YES.

These are good questions and each has a use case, but for the most part, don’t change the date or repost.

When you re-post, listeners who are subscribed will see the re-post as a new episode, marking it as not played and giving them the experience as if it is a new episode, even if it is not. In almost all cases this is not what you want to achieve.

When you change the date, listeners will view the list of episodes and see the older episode now on top of the list (latest being on the top of their list of episodes for your show), but because the underlying post is the same, it does not appear as a new episode to them, it will continue to be viewed as played previously.

What you said originally however, your simply adding the transcript into the episode show notes, you can edit the previously published posts and save them with the edits and leave it at that. The feed will have the new information from that point, anyone subscribed will see the new information if they dig to that episode. Basically, update as you would for a website, from that point forward you should be good without impacting how the listeners interact with your podcast.

    Thanks,
    Angelo

Okay, thank you both. We’ll leave the date as-is when we add the transcribed text. We’ll focus on internal linking to help get visitors/crawlers to the expanded resource since my podcasts tend to be on evergreen topics.
