• Hi,

In Google’s PSI one of the ‘Opportunities’ for the Mobile tab is ‘Properly Size Images’ and it shows my main Home page image – a 235k webp image.

The size of the image is 1200(w)x800(h). My container width is also 1200. The image size selected is ‘FullSize’.

I notice in the PSI text that it says “Avoid using ‘Full Size’ images unless the dimensions are adequate for their usage.” I would have thought that 1200 container size was adequate for a 1200(w) image. What am I missing?

    Thanks,
    Richie

  • Hi there,

the Properly Size Images opportunity is referring to the File Size ( yeah could be better explained ) not the dimensions of the image.

When Google tests the site it calculates the kBytes of data the image being displayed and the actual number of kBytes downloaded. If the difference is 4kb or more than it raises that flag.

So although you may not be able to remove the Opportunity as 4kb difference is tiny. You should look at better compression of the original image. 235kb for the featured image, especially with webP, is very large – at 1200px you should be able to get the original down to 50-60kb.

Ahhhh …. that makes more sense!

Thanks, David, much appreciated. I’ll look at reducing the file size of the image (I have been using Glossy on ShortPixel – perhaps I should shift to Lossy …)

I personally like to upload smaller images to begin with – i use ImageOptim on Mac – they provide some PC alternatives here:

    https://imageoptim.com/versions.html

Always best to get as small a file uploaded to begin with – it will cut down database sizes by not storing the original large image ??

    Glad to be of help.

Interesting. And I can see how that makes sense.

Do you ‘double optimise’, once before uploading and then again once uploaded? Or is the ImageOptim step instead of the post-upload (ShortPixel in my case) step?

    Sorry, I know this isn’t directly GP-related ??

    Google PSI cheats! ??

Original message: Image is 235k, potential savings 35k.
Optimised image message: Image is 107k, potential savings 16k.

I’ll keep working on it …

I only optimize the once before uploading to the site.
If its a large site where a LOT of images are being uploaded, particularly by may users then i may resort to using a service like Shortpixel. But optimizing before upload is always best in my opinion.

Well thats a great improvement ?? Yep – its a constant battle trying to impress Google.
