Duplicate Orders Stripe Payment Intent Error: Received unknown parameter: level3

  • Running WooCommerce Version 5.2.2 with WooCommerce Stripe Gateway Version 5.1.0

    We are seeing “Received unknown parameter: level3” errors in our Stripe logs and getting multiple duplicate orders from customers in quick succession.

    Able to reliably recreate the issue.

    When the customer submits the order they are brought back to top of checkout page with an empty red error box and no additional info.

    At that point the order is now recorded in Woo in the orders list and the payment successful – but from the customer perspective, their cart is still full, no order emails received, so they hit submit again and again not understanding what’s wrong.

    This is what the payment log in Stripe looks like when the customer doesn’t hit submit more than once:

    The 400 error log entry has:

    Error message
    “message”: “Received unknown parameter: level3”
    “type”: “invalid_request_error”

    Within a second of that error another request succeeds to POST /v1/payment_intents/pi_1….Q/confirm – the only difference is that the second request omits the level3 parameter data.

    My focus is on this part:

    When the customer submits the order they are brought back to top of checkout page with an empty red error box and no additional info.

    This means your site isn’t either correctly redirecting the customer or presenting an error.

    Overrides: rchs-2016/woocommerce/checkout/thankyou.php version 3.2.0 is out of date. The core version is 3.7.0

    Since you can recreate the issue and you have an outdated template file that is the page after payment confirmation, I’d recommend to walk through a conflict test to narrow down the cause of this.
