links-update-xml.php gone

I notice that Matthew has removed wordpress/wp-includes/links-update-xml.php from the WP download with the message “Removal of changes.xml bloat.”

Is there a new way to keep track of recently-updated sites in one’s linkroll, or is this an idea whose time has passed?
